How to Prepare for a Dexa Bone Density Exam

On the day of the exam you may eat normally. You should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam. This includes multivitamins that have calcium in them.

What Happens During a Dexa Bone Density Exam

You will lie on a comfortable padded table. The technologist will go over your history form with you and position you on the table to obtain the best possible images.  You will be asked to remove and zippers or metal around the lower back and hips. The technologist will place your feet in different positions and the arm of the table will slowly glide above you.  This exams usually takes around 5-10 minutes.

What happens After the Dexa Bone Density Exam

Your trained technologist will calculate the results and send them directly to your doctor for prompt results.
