ESH unveils the da Vinci Surgical System and Comprehensive Robotic-Assisted Surgery Program

Excelsior Springs, MO. (July 31, 2019) – Something big has arrived at Excelsior Springs Hospital (ESH) that will help to improve the lives of thousands of people throughout the Northwest Missouri region. ESH has invested in the da Vinci Xi Surgical System® and will begin offering a comprehensive robotic-assisted surgery program, beginning July 31, 2019.

The da Vinci Surgical System® was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. If someone has been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery, they may be a candidate for this technology. The da Vinci Xi Surgical system® is a state-of–the-art system, but more impressive than the robot itself, are the outcomes after surgery. Smaller incisions mean less recovery time, less risk of bleeding during and after surgery, fewer complications and less pain, resulting in less pain medications being required. The majority of patients recover very well postoperatively, including obese, complex and elderly patients. Most are able to recover with minimal pain medication and are able to return to their home the same day.

“Acquiring the da Vinci Robot System® at Excelsior Springs Hospital modernizes the quality of care we provide our patients every day,” said Hospital CEO Kristen DeHart. “Robotic surgery allows surgeons better vision of the surgical field and precision while performing complex and routine surgeries. This advantage strengthens our commitment to providing advanced patient care to our community and beyond.”

Douglas Nespory, D.O., FACOS has been a member of the Excelsior Springs Hospital medical staff for 15+ years, and recently became employed as a full-time General Surgeon. Dr. Nespory specializes in open, trauma, laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery. Dr. Nespory is a leading user of the da Vinci Xi Surgical System® in the Kansas City area. With the ability to perform 5-6 cases per day, patients no longer have to wait weeks for an elective procedure. “Although I was initially skeptical of robotic surgeries, I became fully vested after seeing impressive patient satisfaction results and less need for post-operative narcotics,” said Nespory. “Not only are general surgeons embracing the robotic results, other specialists, including urologists and gynecologists are utilizing the system with similar outcomes. The da Vinci is a wonderful resource to attract other specialists to Excelsior Springs Hospital.”

We are excited to bring this technology to Excelsior Springs and our surrounding communities. The addition of the da Vinci strengthens our commitment to our ongoing commitment to provide the highest quality of healthcare for our patients.

“Our patients deserve the very best,” said Rich Andrew, Hospital Board President. “Performing surgeries using the da Vinci Robotic system® is offering them the very best. Robotic surgery is the wave of the future, and we are proud to bring this advanced surgery capability to our patients.”
