Bone Density Now
Being Offered
In-House:
Excelsior Springs
Hospital has
recently purchased
state-of-the-art,
highly accurate Bone
Density technology
that can test bone
mass in less than 15
minutes. Testing is
available 6 days a
week. Bone Density
testing is an
important screening
mechanism that tests
for Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a
disease in which
bones become fragile
and more likely to
break. If not
prevented or if left
untreated,
osteoporosis can
progress painlessly
until a bone breaks.
These broken bones,
also known as
fractures, occur
typically in the
hip, spine, and
wrist.
Any bone can be
affected, but of
special concern are
fractures of the hip
and spine. A hip
fracture almost
always requires
hospitalization and
major surgery. It
can impair a
person's ability to
walk unassisted and
may cause prolonged
or permanent
disability or even
death. Spinal or
vertebral fractures
also have serious
consequences,
including loss of
height, severe back
pain, and deformity.
Millions of
Americans are at
risk. While women
are four times more
likely than men to
develop the disease,
men also suffer from
osteoporosis.
Risk
Factors
-
Certain people
are more likely
to develop
osteoporosis
than others.
Factors that
increase the
likelihood of
developing
osteoporosis and
broken bones are
called "risk
factors." Many
of these risk
factors include:
-
Being female
-
Older age
-
Family
history of
osteoporosis
or broken
bones
-
Being small
and thin
-
Certain
race/ethnicities
such as
Caucasian,
Asian, or
Hispanic/Latino
although
African
Americans
are also at
risk
-
History of
broken bones
-
Low sex
hormones
-
Low
estrogen
levels
in
women,
including
menopause
-
Missing
periods
(amenorrhea)
-
Low
levels
of
testosterone
and
estrogen
in men
-
Diet
-
Low
calcium
intake
-
Low
vitamin
D intake
-
Excessive
intake
of
protein,
sodium
and
caffeine
-
Inactive
lifestyle
-
Smoking
-
Alcohol
abuse
-
Certain
medications
such as
steroid
medications,
some
anticonvulsants
and others
-
Certain
diseases and
conditions
such as
anorexia
nervosa,
rheumatoid
arthritis,
gastrointestinal
diseases and
others
If you have any of
these risk factors,
please take the time
to discuss them with
your physician.
Scans can only be
done with a

Excelsior Springs Hospital is host to District I Auxiliary meeting

Hospital CEO Sally Nance, at podium, introduces local participants for a panel discussion of their experience with strokes. Seated from left are Kent Cantrell, ES Fire Chief, Shirley Radley, stroke victim, Kathy Rose, RN and Christy Marker, PT.
Excelsior Springs Hospital was honored to have been chosen as the sight for the District I Auxiliary Meeting held Monday, May 3, 2010 in the Community Room.
89 Auxiliary members arrived from Fairfax, Bethany, St. Joseph, Chillicothe, Liberty, North Kansas City, Richmond, St. Lukes Northland, and Maryville. The event, hosted by Excelsior Springs Hospital Auxiliary, had a full day planned with breakfast, speakers, tours, lunch and group sessions. The theme for the day was Act Fast For Stroke. The keynote speaker was Dr. Aaron Notestine from Northland Cardiology. His presentation on strokes included prevention, signs and symptoms to watch for. A four-person panel, consisting of Kent Cantrell, ES Fire Chief, Shirley Radley, stroke victim, Kathy Rose, RN and Christy Marker, PT, were on hand to discuss their personal experiences with strokes.
After breaking for lunch, three separate seminars were held. A marketing seminar, presented by Daphne Bowman of Willow Springs Mercantile, pointed out ways to better market hospital gift shops. Dr. Diane Gonzalez discussed ways to enhance volunteer programs for various positions throughout the hospital. Stephanie Nessa and Christy Marker, ESH Rehab Department, was on hand to demonstrate rehab therapy for stroke patients using the Wii. Each participant was then asked to make an ice cream sundae when wearing gloves, using a walker and eyeglasses that were altered to show visitors the possible side effects of strokes.
All visitors were given gift bags containing items made in Excelsior Springs. The American Italian Pasta Company donated bags of pasta along with water from the Excelsior Bottling Company. The event ended with a trip to the Hospital Gift Shop.
ESH receives 2010 Best of Excelsior Springs Award
For the second consecutive year, Excelsior Springs Hospital has been selected for the 2010 Best of Excelsior Springs Award in the Medical & Surgical Hospitals category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).
The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Nationwide, only 1 in 70 (1.4%) 2010 Award recipients qualified as two-time Award Winners. Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2010 USCA Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

Excelsior Springs Hospital participates in National Wear Red Day
National Wear Red To Work Day was held Friday, Feb. 5 at ESH. This national observance is an important part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women’s Heart Health movement, a program that builds awareness, urges women to take action to reduce the risk of heart disease and raises money for lifesaving education and research.
Heart disease, the number one killer of women, does not discriminate; it affects women from all age groups, ethnicities, family histories and walks of life. Too many women die each year because they are unaware of this vital statistic: One in three women suffers in silence, and almost one woman dies every minute of this largely preventable disease.
Excelsior Springs Hospital is a proud supporter of the Go Red For Women campaign. We are happy to spread the message “Our Heart...Our Choice” to raise awareness of heart disease and empowering women and workplaces to reduce the risk of heart disease. To learn more about heart disease in women and choices you can make to live heart healthy, visit GoRedForWomen.org and sign up for the movement.
